Mountain Tapir
Stop by and meet Mochi [MOH-chee], one of only three mountain tapirs remaining in the entire country! Experience the magic of this critically endangered, extremely rare and iconic species from tropical areas of the Andes mountains in South America. Tapirs look a little bit like bears or anteaters, but they’re actually more closely related to horses, zebras and rhinos.
See Mochi’s new roommate, Bahati [buh-HAH-tee] on the other side of the tapir yard! Bahati is another magical species, called an okapi. Okapis look like a cross between a zebra and a horse, but are giraffes’ closest relatives! Okapis are native to rainforests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Africa.
